The ones talking about the Justice Laws should agree on a definition of what the rule of law means, Chairman of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) Călin Popescu-Tariceanu stated on Wednesday, after the consultations held at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace with President Klaus Iohannis.

"The President said that he is trying, through his constitutional role, to mediate between the political parties, so that all the issues related to the Justice Laws be solved," Tariceanu stated.

He said that an agreement in Parliament on this topic is "useful." "It's useful that the political parties represented in Parliament (...) try to agree, possibly have a consensus on the amendments that must be made to the Justice Laws, taking into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission, recommendations that the European Commission will also take into account when drafting the CVM [the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism] report, but these discussions should start from some premises which I presented to the President," the ALDE Chairman pointed out.

One of the principles of the discussion would be, as Tariceanu stated, the definition of the rule of law, which should have "the defense of individual rights and freedoms" in the forefront.

"We must agree on a definition of what the rule of law means, because we cannot have different views," the Senate President explained.

In this context, he also talked about the latest recommendations of the Venice Commission.

"From this perspective, I have a relatively bitter taste regarding the Venice Commission, which, as far as can I see, doesn't say a word about the impact of amending the Justice Laws on ensuring or guaranteeing the citizens' rights and freedoms," Calin Popescu-Tariceanu said.
