Romania's President Klaus Iohannis said on Saturday in Chisinau that the Declaration on bilateral cooperation to strengthen the Republic of Moldova's resilience is a bilateral commitment that also remains binding for the future heads of the two countries.
He emphasised in a press conference that the relationship built between Romania and the Republic of Moldova is not just a personal relationship between Klaus Iohannis and Maia Sandu.
"What we have built between Romania and Moldova has not been built only between President Maia Sandu and I. It is a broad construction, it is a comprehensive construction, which reaches the sectoral level. Governments, ministries and local administrations are needed for these things to continue and function well. For this reason, we felt that the time was right to sign a bilateral commitment, which remains binding for those who come after us, because it is not possible for the relationship between two states to be based solely on the personal relationship between the leaders of the two states. This relationship needs to be strong at institutional and intra-institutional level. And that is what we are doing by signing this document, to make sure that the good things started and the projects started, in the energy sector, in infrastructure, in bridge building, in school construction, repairs, kindergartens and so on, continue at least at the same intensity. These are the things we want. There are things that I, personally, have built. I am confident that, on Romania's side, they will be continued," said president Iohannis.
In her turn, Moldovan president Maia Sandu said that this declaration reaffirms Romania's firm support in the face of the numerous challenges facing the Republic of Moldova.
"We are grateful to Romania for its support in strengthening Moldova's resilience, and the Declaration signed today reaffirms your firm support in the face of the many challenges we are dealing with," said the leader from Chisinau.
