National Defence Minister Angel Tilvar sent a message on the occasion of NATO Day highlighting that the values promoted by the Washington Treaty are essential benchmarks for Romanians, and the transatlantic relationship remains the fundamental pillar of collective security.
The minister said that Romania's accession to NATO was a major national goal supported by Romanians, regardless of political beliefs or social status, and an essential step towards strengthening the country's security and stability, demonstrating commitment to democratic values.
"The values promoted by the Washington Treaty, especially the profound significance of Article 5 regarding collective defence, have been and remain essential benchmarks in which Romanians strongly believe," Tilvar said in the message posted on Facebook.
He emphasised the "crucial" role of Romanian soldiers in achieving this national goal, "through successful participation in international missions, professionalism, adaptability and the awareness that they are, at all times, ambassadors of Romania."
"Over the 21 years since accession, the international security environment has changed radically, which requires constant adaptation of NATO, and implicitly of the Romanian Army, to respond to an ever-widening spectrum of threats. We are in the process of adapting national legislation to meet current security challenges and continue to allocate an adequate defence budget, in line with the commitments made within NATO. These resources allow for the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment, modernisation of the Romanian armed forces, and the initiation of new programmes," added the minister of Defence.
He also mentioned Romania's allies who have troops stationed in the country, thanking them for their unity and solidarity.
"The transatlantic relationship remains the essential pillar of collective security, and we will continue to actively engage in strengthening this vital link for the stability of the entire Euro-Atlantic region. Last but not least, I voice a sincere message of gratitude to all allies contributing troops on our national territory, demonstrating day by day what NATO stands for: unity and solidarity," said Angel Tilvar.
