DefMin: We consider measures to strengthen monitoring, security of Romania's and, implicitly, NATO's airspace

The Minister of National Defense, Angel Tilvar, stated, on Monday, at a meeting with the head of the National Guard of the U.S. state of Alabama, that Romania is considering measures to strengthen the monitoring and security of the country's airspace and, implicitly, of NATO, both through efforts at the national level and through cooperation with the allies, the maximum priority being the safety of the citizens, especially of the communities in the vicinity of the brutal attacks of the Russian Federation on Ukrainian civilian ports.

The Minister of National Defense, Angel Tilvar, and the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Daniel Petrescu, met, on Monday, at the Defense Ministry (MApN) headquarters, with the head of the National Guard of the American state of Alabama, Mrs. Major General Sheryl E. Gordon.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Defense, the agenda of the meeting included security in the Black Sea, the impact of the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine on Euro-Atlantic security, aspects of Romanian-American cooperation in the field of defense, within the framework of the Romania-USA Strategic Partnership and the State Partnership Program (SPP) with the National Guard of the State of Alabama, launched three decades ago, as well as the measures to strengthen security in the border area with Ukraine, after the identification on Romanian territory of "drone fragments similar to those used by the Russian army".

On this occasion, the implications of the attacks of the Russian Federation on the port infrastructure of Ukraine, from the proximity of Romania's borders, as well as the effects on global food security, were analyzed, the cited source states.

Minister Tilvar emphasized, in the context, the measures to strengthen the security in the border area with Ukraine, especially in the conditions generated by the identification on the national territory, in areas close to the Ukrainian port infrastructure attacked by the forces of the Russian Federation, of fragments of a similar drone those used by the Russian army.

Also, Angel Tilvar appreciated the commitment of the US forces deployed in our country and the excellent military cooperation with the Romanian armed forces in order to ensure interoperability and the contribution to strengthening the security of the Euro-Atlantic space on the eastern flank.

The Romanian official mentioned the importance of strengthening air police missions in Romania, expressing his appreciation for the US decision to deploy F-16 aircraft in this regard.

It was also highlighted the role that the State Partnership Program with the USA can have on the operationalization of the F-16 Training Center in Romania.

General Petrescu supported the importance of the program of joint activities for the development of the capabilities of the Romanian Army.

The military delegation led by Major General Sheryl E. Gordon is paying a working visit to Romania between September 10-16, the program including meetings with representatives of some units and large units from the Bucharest, Sibiu, Targu Mures and Sighisoara garrisons
