Save Romania Union (USR) Chairman Dominic Fritz declared on Thursday, after the consultations held at the Cotroceni Palace with President Nicusor Dan, that his formation does not enter the government in order to clinch portfolios, and that the USR does not consider the VAT increase to represent a red line, as long as it leads to real reform.

"For us, the reason why we are entering this government is not the ministerial portfolios, but because now is the time for a fundamental change in the way the state and government function. Also, we have a certain weight in this coalition, we account for 21% and it follows that this responsibility must also reflect in the assignment of the ministries, and we have no reason to take a step back in this regard," said the USR leader.

Referring to the various economic measures that are being tabled at the negotiations, Fritz said that "There is a menu of measures designed to add up to a certain figure, and a set of measures need to be picked from this menu. (...) Even if we are not happy with the VAT increase, we are not drawing a red line there. This is not a red line for us if in the end the package agreed upon proves a real will to overhaul the Romanian state, but we will discuss the matter today and I am confident that we will reach a conclusion."
