Two emergency mountain shelters are to be installed in Romania's Fagaras and Iezer Mountains, in the Carpathians, under the national Shelters of Hope project, the Arges County Mountain Rescue Service (Salvamont Arges) announced on Tuesday.
The project is being implemented with the support of Lions Romania and the Department for Emergency Situations, agerpres reports.
"One shelter will be installed in the Fagaras Mountains, at Lake Galbena, and the other in the Iezer Mountains, on Mount Batrana. They will be transported to their final locations with the assistance of the General Aviation Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which will provide a helicopter," Salvamont Arges said in a statement.
Hikers will be able to access the shelters by calling Romania's 112 emergency number. Callers will be referred to Salvamont Arges and given a unique access code valid for 12 hours.
"These shelters are more than just mountain structures. They can provide safe refuge and even save lives in critical situations. (...) Each shelter can accommodate up to four people and will provide access to electricity, Wi-Fi and mobile phone charging facilities," the statement added.
The nationwide Shelters of Hope project, run by Lions Romania District 124, aims to set up 12 mountain shelters, according to the same source.
