Tennis player Gabriela Ruse (WTA's 112th) had a heartfelt reaction to fellow national Simona Halep's retirement announcement, stating that her performances could never be matched.
"This post is for and about you. I know that perhaps at this moment the words of a fellow tennis player may not seem so important, but I want you to know that I am writing to you from the bottom of my heart. Let me start by thanking you for all the emotions you made me experience when I was a young player and I looked up to you with admiration. You were my idol until the day I realized that I would have to face you on the court. I admit, I felt a mixture of emotions when I found out about your suspension, but I strongly believe that the legacy you left in Romanian tennis can never be equaled. Thank you for making me believe that little Gabriela Ruse too would be able to play on the biggest arenas in the world. I hope that the new chapter that opens in your life will be as beautiful as your career has been," Ruse wrote on Instagram.
Two-time grand slam champion and former world No.1 Simona Halep announced on Tuesday her decision to retire at the Transylvania Open in Cluj, after losing her first-round match against Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-1.
At the post-match press conference, Halep was hesitant about putting an end to her career, stating that she no longer wants to make plans and that she wants to rest because she feels exhausted professionally.
Halep has struggled with injuries since returning to the court last year after serving a doping ban handed to her in September 2023 after testing positive for the banned substance Roxadustat at the 2022 U.S. Open. In March last year, the Court of Arbitration for Sport agreed to Halep's appeal and reduced the backdated ban, clearing her to return to the sport.
