A special screening of the film "Popas Imperial" (Imperial Stopover), dedicated to composer Ciprian Porumbescu, followed by an extraordinary concert performed by the Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra Vienna, will take place on July 20 at the Romanian Athenaeum, under the auspices of the "Majestic Summer Concert Gala - 200 Years of Johann Strauss".
According to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, the film essay "Popas Imperial", directed by filmmakers Cristian Radu Nema and Mimis Ravanis, with a screenplay by Bianca Beatrice Michi, brings to the audience Vienna's fantastic realm during the student years of the great composer Ciprian Porumbescu.
During his student years, Porumbescu enjoyed the privilege of attending concerts conducted by Eduard Strauss, in which the orchestra also performed his unique composition, "Camelii"/Camellias, specifies the cited source.
"Strauss played beautifully. He included my waltz "Florile dalbe" (White Flowers), later renamed "Camelii" (Camellias), dedicated to Therese Ed. Kaunitz, patroness of the youth parties, in the programme of the Albrecht Dürer Association Ball in 1880," Porumbescu would note in his diary.
From the grandeur of the buildings and musical experiences alongside Eduard Strauss to the seemingly mundane confessions of everyday life, with its small joys and hardships, the film aims to capture a special moment in the artistic journey of the great creator, whose destiny was very similar to that of Mihai Eminescu, who also stayed in the capital of the empire.
"Without claiming to recreate the Viennese atmosphere of the second half of the 19th century, the documentary captures images caught by the eye and mind of the young musician in their original simplicity, images that arise from the vast epistolary universe that Porumbescu reveals to his family. I thus remain faithful to the desire instilled in me by my spiritual mentor, Academician Alexandru Surdu, to continue building monuments to the heroes of Romanian culture," said Bianca Beatrice Michi, author of the film's concept and screenplay, researcher in philosophy.
"Whenever I had the opportunity, I argued why Romanian cultural figures, whether actors, directors, composers or poets, are on the same level as world figures. The tribute to Ciprian Porumbescu at the Romanian Athenaeum proves once again that he is as artistically powerful as Strauss. Just as Eminescu's notebooks are of the same value as those of Leonardo Da Vinci. It pains me when I hear, time and again, that we Romanians, if we had been born in other countries, would have been of a different calibre. Cultural and artistic value is always comparable to that of the world's great artists," said director Cristian Radu Nema.
The Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra Vienna brings the essence of authentic Viennese music to the Bucharest audience, performing an impeccable interpretation of the works of Strauss and his contemporaries. The orchestra, made up of experienced musicians who grew up or studied in Vienna, will bring to life the magic of that lavish period, when waltzes, operettas and elegant balls dominated the atmosphere.
The famous waltzes "The Blue Danube", "Viennese Blood", "The Emperor Waltz" and "The Radetzky March" are just some of the masterpieces that can be heard during the concert.
The evening will be complemented by spectacular arias performed by the orchestra's soloists, that will add an extra touch of charm and elegance to Strauss's already beloved music, further reads the press release.
