Interim Foreign Affairs Minister Oana Toiu held a telephone conversation on Thursday with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, during which she conveyed Romania's concerns over the spillover effects of the war in Ukraine on neighbouring countries.
"Neighbours and strategic partners build stronger relationships through open dialogue and coordinated preventive action to manage crisis situations. I had a necessary conversation with Andrii Sybiha following discussions between our defence ministers and bilateral contacts between the presidential teams. We agreed that the highest and overriding responsibility of every state is to protect the lives and safety of its own citizens," Toiu wrote on X.
She added that she had reiterated Romania's condemnation of Russia's illegal war of aggression and the two countries' shared commitment to achieving a ceasefire and a lasting peace.
"I also expressed our concerns regarding the devastating impact of the war on the affected communities in Ukraine and its spillover effects on neighbouring regions. My counterpart gave me his full assurance of Ukraine's commitment to making every necessary effort to jointly address the cross-border risks generated by Russian aggression," the Romanian minister said.
According to her post, the two officials also discussed the importance of improving early warning and situational awareness mechanisms, as well as "our shared responsibility to keep the Black Sea safe and protect strategic infrastructure, humanitarian corridors and shipping routes."
