Asia - Pacific is one of Romania's priority action areas in diversifying cooperation relations, Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu said at the meeting titled "Asia-Pacific Initiative - Partnership for the knowledge economy". The event was organised by Idea Factory Think Tank, the Information Technology Research and Development National Institute, ICI Bucharest and the Exporters' Association in Romania, reads a press release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry sent to Agerpres.
"We hope that today's event, a first at MAE level, facilitate the shaping of new ideas, proposals, initiatives, courses of action in this direction," Melescanu stated at the opening ceremony of the event. He talked about Romania's foreign affairs cooperation perspectives. "Against the backdrop of globalization deepening and the contemporary world becoming evermore inter-dependent, it is high time we diversified our cooperation relations with foreign partners, and Asia-Pacific represents one of the priority areas of action.
The Foreign Affairs Minister recalled MAE's committed role in the economic diplomacy demarches, meant to promote Romania's economic interests, both on the level of attracting investment to our country and that of capitalising on opportunities on foreign markets. Teodor Melescanu pointed out the importance of intensifying the political dialogue with many states in the region, which represents MAE's ongoing objective, as well as granting special attention to boosting sectorial cooperation, be it economic sectors, or other domains, that have a positive impact on the economic plan included, namely education, research and innovation. In his message, the head of the Romanian diplomacy also referred to the fact that the development of the EU's relations with Asia- pacific will constitute an important benchmark on Romania's agenda in view of its presidency of the EU Council in the first semestre of 2019. Attending the event were Minister for Business Environment and Entrepreneurship Ilan Laufer, president of the Competition Council Bogdan Chiritoiu, president of the Romanian Space Agency Marius-Ioan Piso, Chairman of The Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB) Mihnea Costoiu, President of Romania's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIR) Mihai Daraban, Romanian accredited ambassadors to states in the Asia-Pacific area, as well as representatives of partner institutions in the business and academic milieu. The mediator of the talks was State Secretary for Global Bilateral Affairs with Romania's Foreign Ministry Monica Gheorghita.
