In over half of the attacks carried out in recent years by the Russian Federation against the Ukrainian port infrastructure near the border with Romania, the military staff of Romania's Defence Ministry (MApN) have identified fragments of drones on the national soil, most of them in the northern area of Tulcea County, MApN informed at a request of Agerpres.
During the almost 70 attacks recorded near the Romanian-Ukrainian border, there were 21 penetrations of drones used by Russia in the national airspace, and in 41 instances, fragments from these devices were found on the territory of Romania, most of them in the northern area of Tulcea County.
"During the current year, 15 situations generated by attacks carried out near the border were recorded, and in 10 of them it was necessary to use the aircraft of the Air Policing Service for monitoring and managing the air situation. The MApN departments permanently maintain a high level of vigilance and ensure the continuous monitoring of the airspace, land and sea, with the protection measures being adjusted in real time."
The ministry says that, at the moment, there are no direct threats to the population or the national territory of Romania and encourages the population to get information from official sources.
"People are encouraged to comply with the instructions of the authorities and get information from official sources. Romania cooperates closely with NATO allies and international partners, including Moldova and Ukraine, based on existing mechanisms, through information exchange and coordination in the management of security situations, contributing to strengthening the reaction capacity in the region."
The first drone components used by Russia during the attacks against Ukraine were discovered in the village of Plauru, Ceatalchioi Tulcea County, on September 5, 2023, and after identifying them, MApN ordered several measures in the area, including supplementing the number of specialists to respond as soon as possible, setting up more observation points and ground sensors, and also increasing the frequency of patrols on the Danube.
