Implementing a construction project for a new Bucharest metro main route linking the city's North Station to the Henri Coanda Airport that is partially funded by Japan was discussed on Wednesday by Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu and senior official with Japan's Foreign Ministry Nobuo Kishi, according to Romania's Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE).

Melescanu welcomed visiting Kishi at the MAE main offices in Bucharest on Wednesday.

MAE quotes Melescanu as having underscored Romania's special attention attached to boosting ties with Japan by consolidating high-level dialogue and expanding bilateral economic cooperation.

Melescanu also pointed to the presence of Japanese companies in Romania, while voicing hope that new Japanese investment will be drawn to Romania by the country's attractive economic environment characterised by solid growth, friendly taxation and a highly qualified workforce. He mentioned the existing opportunities for economic cooperation in the areas of IT, automotive industry, agriculture and tourism.

Senior official Kishi pointed to a rising trend in cooperation between Japan and Romania over the past years, which is reflected in Japan being the largest Asian investor in Romania.

The two officials discussed the implementation of a construction project for a new Bucharest metro main route linking the city's North Station to the Henri Coanda Airport that is partially funded by Japan. Melescanu underscored the determination of Bucharest administration officials to complete the project, mentioning as proof to the point the passage on July 13 of a governmental decision concerning expropriations via the new route, says MAE.

Mention was made of the substance and potentials of bilateral cooperation between Romania and Japan in areas such as research, science and technology illustrated by the presence of Japanese professor Kazuo Tanaka as scientific director on board of the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) project at Magurele, in Romania.

Both officials voiced a shared wish for cooperation to be developed between the two countries in education, culture and interpersonal exchanges. Melescanu voiced a special interest in the current temporary visa exemptions for Romanian nationals travelling to Japan becoming permanent.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for an exchange of opinions on the latest developments in international current affairs, with emphasis on security in Eastern Asia and Eastern Europe, the future of the European Union and Brexit.

Kishi was on working visit to Romania, scheduled to also call on President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Mihai Tudose. This was his second such visit, after a previous one in December 2013.
