Romanian-Ukrainian pair Gabriela Ruse/Marta Kostiuk qualified on Thursday for the second round of the women's doubles at the US Open tennis tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year, after defeating the Ukrainian-American couple Katerina Baindl/Katie Volynets 6-1, 7-6 (7/5) at the Flushing Meadows tennis courts in New York.

Ruse and Kostiuk won after one hour and 43 minutes.

Ruse and Kostiuk secured a USD 40,000 check and 130 WTA doubles points, and their next opponents will be the winners of the Lucia Bronzetti (Italy)/Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) - Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic)/Taylor Townsend (USA/N.3) match.

In another match, Monica Niculescu and China's Hanyu Guo, who were coming after a WTA 500 title in Monterrey, were defeated by British-Czech couple Maia Lumsden/Anna Siskova 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, after two hours and 33 minutes.

Niculescu and Guo were awarded a USD 25,000 check and 10 WTA doubles points.
