Gas distributor Distrigaz Sud Retele announced an extended suspension of natural gas supply to several streets in Sector 5, following Friday's fatal explosion in a residential block on Vicina Street, as the area remains secured by authorities for ongoing investigations and safety assessments.
According to a company press release, gas services were initially cut off at 11:53 a.m. on Friday for safety reasons, affecting approximately 1,086 residential customers. The interrupted supply covers Malcoci, Oltina, Pecineaga, Slt. Popa, Popina, Pricopan, Rahovei, Salaj and Vicina streets.
'Given that the affected area is still being secured by authorities, we are extending the gas supply interruption (...),' the company said, adding that restoration details will be communicated once new information becomes available.
Gas supply to buildings directly impacted by the explosion will only resume once investigations are complete, officials confirmed.
The explosion killed three people and injured 20 others, with more than 400 residents affected overall. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said that, based on initial assessments by the State Construction Inspectorate, the damaged block will likely be demolished, as it is deemed beyond repair.
