The German embassy in Bucharest announces that it will finance with 50,000 Euro a project regarding women's rights of the FILIA Center for Curricular Development and Gender Studies NGO, in which, among other things, a representative statistic study will be documented in the area of gender violence, the first one in Romania in approximately 20 years.

According to a press release sent by the embassy to AGERPERS on Tuesday, the project "Knowledge is power! Research and advocacy to improving policies for improving policies of countering gender violence" will take place during the period of April - December 2022, and the collaboration contract was signed by ambassador Peer Gebauer and the director of the FILIA organization, Andreea Rusu, Agerpres.ro informs.

"In cooperation with interested MPs, a proper strategy will be drafted and the legal framework will be created. The purpose is to consolidate women's rights and ensure consistent criminal prosecution of violence against women, in accordance with the Istanbul Convention," the press release shows.

Furthermore, a better protection of vulnerable women will be promoted, through events, publications and local and national campaigns.

Ambassador Gebauer said, according to the press release, that the COVID-19 pandemic showed "without any doubt" that violence against girls and women, as well as insufficient public participation of women represent a real problem, not only in war zones, but in all countries and spheres of society.

The FILIA director, Andreea Rusu, said that the project represents an important support brought to the fight for gender equality and the prevention and counter of violence against women.

"One in four women in Romania was physically or sexually assaulted by her partner. Over half of Romanians consider that rape is justifiable in certain conditions. These statistics and many other show us that we have a long road until we achieve gender equality. The project that we are starting along with the German Embassy represents an important support brought to the fight for gender equality and the prevention and counter of violence against women," Rusu said.

With a history of over 20 years, the FILIA center is one of the most visible and active non-government organizations for women's rights. Last year, the organization supported approximately 2,300 beneficiaries, implemented seven projects and published three studies about gender equality.
