Public administration debt (government debt) rose to 862.344 billion lei in May 2024 from 852.816 billion lei in the previous month, according to data published by the Finance Ministry (MF).
As a percentage of the GDP, government debt increased to 52.6%, from 52.1% in April (GDP as reported by the National Institute of Statistics on July 8, 2024).
In the fifth month of the year, medium- and long-term debt increased to 810.612 billion lei, from 787.02 billion lei in April, while short-term debt fell to 51.73 billion lei, from 65.796 billion lei in the previous month.
Most of this debt, 718.265 billion lei, was represented by government securities. Loans amounted to 129.142 billion lei.
Debt in national currency amounted to 405.322 billion lei, that in euro to 371.29 billion lei equivalent, and debt in US dollars to 84.567 billion lei equivalent.
Also, central government debt had reached 840.798 billion lei in May 2024, up from 831.166 billion lei in April, of which 789.1 billion lei medium and long-term. Most of the central government debt was contracted in lei (388.25 billion lei) and in euro (366.817 billion lei equivalent).
Local public administration debt decreased to 21.54 billion lei, from 21.65 billion lei in the previous month, of which 21.512 billion lei in the medium and long term.
At the same time, the general government domestic debt in May 2024 amounted to 416.386 billion lei (25.4% of GDP), of which 399.486 billion lei was central government debt and 16.899 billion lei local government debt.
According to MF data, the external debt of the public administration amounted to 445.958 billion lei (27.2% of GDP), of which 441.311 billion lei was the external debt of the central public administration and 4.647 billion lei the external debt of the local public administration.
