The government extended during its Thursday meeting the capping cap on the commercial mark-up for basic foods, the minister of agriculture and rural development, Florin Barbu, wrote in a post on his Facebook page.

The minister's announcement comes in addition to a previous post in which he welcomes the decision of the governing coalition to extend the measure established by the PSD (Social Democratic Party) regarding the cap on commercial mark-up for basic foods until March 31, 2026.

"I welcome the decision of the governing coalition to extend the measure established by the PSD regarding the cap on the commercial mark-up for basic foods until March 31, 2026. I thank the Competition Council for the data provided in support of this measure, which has already proven its usefulness in protecting the purchasing power of Romanians with low and medium incomes," the minister of agriculture wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

The capping of the commercial mark-up for basic foods, a measure taken in August 2023 to combat excessive price increases and targeting 14 food groups, was continued in 2024, but the list was expanded to include more products.

The Executive decided, at the end of last year, to extend the measure until June 30, 2025, with a further three-month extension, until September 30, 2025, being taken later.
