The interim chair of the Social Democratic Party, Sorin Grindeanu, stated on Thursday in Galati that he has proposed within the governing coalition the rapid establishment of a working group composed of representatives from the main political parties and the judiciary, to draft a new law on magistrates' pensions.
"I believe the country wants these absurdities, these inequities, removed as soon as possible. Romanians do not want to see some people retiring at 48-49 years old with pensions of 6, 7, 8, 9 thousand euros. Romanians want to see fairness. Romanians want to see that we, politicians, act so that when there are excesses like these, we correct them quickly. I proposed in the coalition I believe it was Tuesday, given the failure of the first attempt, the Government's failure that we rapidly form a working group, which within a few days would present a draft. A working group made up of former or current Justice Ministers from PSD, as well as representatives from PNL and USR, but also in dialogue with the power of the state represented by the judiciary. Because if you take the same path a second time by force, you risk failing again. That was the proposal. I did not receive much approval from the prime minister, but I tell you, it is the only way forward," said Grindeanu.
Sorin Grindeanu said the aim of this initiative is to adopt a "fair and equitable" law by 28 November, a deadline after which Romania risks losing over 200 million euros.
"Be aware that there is a deadline: if by 28 November we do not have an approved law, we will lose over 200 million euros. I tell you that the fastest route is the one I proposed within the coalition. If we wait for the Government the Government is obliged to follow the reasoning of the Constitutional Court, to do certain things we might miss the deadline. So a decision must be made. (...) The decision is not only the prime minister's; I believe we all need to see what we ultimately want from this coalition. We want to make good laws, to implement reforms, to correct certain excesses like this one, or do we just want to build an image? If everything turns into a race for image who does what and who takes responsibility we risk failure. That is why I proposed I do not seek credit, I do not care about that what matters to me is to have a draft as soon as possible, to submit it to Parliament or again through assumption of responsibility," Grindeanu added.
He stressed that at present there is a lack of dialogue between the Government, the High Court of Cassation and Justice, and the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), which could affect the drafting of the new law.
"I believe that at this moment there is a lack of dialogue between the Government and the High Court, CSM. I have seen the reactions from the High Court, the CSM, perhaps even from the Prosecutor's Office, and that is not a good sign for the prospect of a new law. That is why I came forward with this proposal. That is why I wanted to propose a solution so we can draft this law as quickly as possible for approval," Grindeanu went on to say.
