The blackout has been a theme that has constantly appeared in recent years in the context of disinformation campaigns, this issue is out of the question, but it is true that the adequacy study shows that we must count on coal-fired power plants to maintain a fair, reasonable degree of energy security, former Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja said on Friday.

According to him, the adequacy study shows that coal-fired power plants are important to maintain a reasonable degree of energy security, of the adequacy of the system, according to Agerpres.

"It is true that, from what I know, the adequacy study shows that we must count on coal-fired groups to maintain a fair, reasonable degree of energy security, of system adequacy. Perhaps in this context I think this idea has been circulated. But I believe that the National Energy System is resilient and especially that it has quality people that I have seen at work and once again I congratulate them on this occasion", added the former minister, honorary advisor to the prime minister and member of the Industry and Services Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.

In this context, Burduja mentioned that he had finalized a draft law for the awarding of an energy merit decoration.

"I have finalized a bill for that new energy merit decoration and I believe that these people deserve it - and if you allow me to close with one of the images that marked me during my mandate. It was about the floods in Galati and the images I received were from my colleagues at DEER. There, people who were chest-deep in water were working to restore the electricity supply in those communities. These unseen heroes are the ones who deserve our appreciation and that is why I will promote this bill to other parliamentary colleagues, at least as a symbolic gesture of recognition of the work and passion of these people", he mentioned.

Sebastian Burduja participated on Friday at the annual conference on the theme "Energy with Responsibility", the 9th edition, organized by the publication InvesTenergy. The event was held under the patronage of the National Energy Regulatory Authority.

Two weeks ago, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan announced that he had commissioned, through Transelectrica, an independent study that revealed that if the coal-fired units at the Oltenia Energy Complex were to be closed, there would be "really" a risk of blackout.

Ivan was asked, at a press conference at the PSD headquarters, if there was a risk of blackout if the Romanian authorities did not reach an agreement with the European Commission representatives to postpone the closure of the coal-fired power plants.

"This week, more precisely on Wednesday, we held several negotiations at the European Commission level on this extremely important subject. According to the commitments made five years ago, when the PNRR was built, Romania assumed the most aggressive decarbonization target in the entire European Union. This means that, by the end of 2025, that is, in three and a half months, Romania should close all the coal-fired power plants that it currently has in operation. The condition was very simple - to replace them with other gas-fired power plants", explained the minister.
