Romania's women's tennis team defeated Georgia 2 - 0 on Saturday in the relegation play-off of the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group I, held at the Complexo de Ténis do Jamor in Oeiras, Portugal, after Elena-Ruxandra Bertea secured the decisive point with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Ekaterine Gorgodze.
Bertea (WTA 292) prevailed after two hours and 33 minutes against a higher-ranked opponent (WTA 164). Earlier, Carmen-Andreea Herea (WTA 553) had put Romania ahead by defeating Sofia Shapatava (WTA 434) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
With this victory, Romania remains in Group I of the competition.
This was the first meeting between the two teams.
Non-playing captain Alexandra Dulgheru selected Elena-Ruxandra Bertea, Gabriela Lee, Ilinca-Dalina Amariei, Carmen-Andreea Herea and Anamaria-Federica Oana for the tournament.
