Two-thirds of Romanians believe that the number of domestic violence cases against women has increased recently, according to the second edition of the Informat.ro - INSCOP Research Barometer, conducted between 20-26 June.

A total of 81.6% of Romanians say they have recently heard media coverage about domestic violence against women, while 18.4% said they are unaware of the subject.

Regarding their level of engagement with the news on this topic, 18% of respondents said they followed stories about domestic violence against women very closely, 28.7% - fairly closely, 31.2% - somewhat closely, and 3.3% - not at all. Another 0.4% said they didn't know or refused to answer.

Those who reported following such news very closely or fairly closely were mainly Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Save Romania Union (USR) voters, people over 60, and residents of Bucharest.

Some 64.2% of those surveyed believe that the number of women subjected to violent acts within the family has increased recently. By contrast, 4.2% think it has decreased, 19.1% believe it has remained equally high, and 3.3% say it has remained equally low. A further 8.9% say they don't know or cannot assess, and 0.3% did not respond.

PSD and Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) voters, women, people over 60, those with primary education, and residents of small urban areas are more likely than the general population to believe that the number of women subjected to violent aggression in the family has increased. Those who believe the number of domestic violence cases has remained equally high are mostly USR voters, people under 45, those with higher education, and residents of Bucharest.

When asked how satisfied or dissatisfied they are with the Romanian Police's efforts to combat domestic violence against women, 7.1% said they are very satisfied, 18.1% - rather satisfied, 35.6% - rather dissatisfied, and 34.9% - very dissatisfied. Another 4.4% didn't know or didn't respond.

The Informat.ro - INSCOP Research Barometer is a monthly public opinion survey conducted by INSCOP Research, commissioned by the news platform Informat.ro, in partnership with the Strategic Thinking Group think-tank.

The set of questions concerning domestic violence against women was developed in collaboration with Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, through the Centre for Research in Communication and Social Innovation.

The data was collected between 20-26 June, via telephone interviews (CATI method), based on a simple, stratified sample of 1,150 individuals, representative of the significant socio-demographic categories (gender, age, occupation) of Romania's non-institutionalised population aged 18 and over. The maximum margin of error is ą2.9%, with a confidence level of 95%.
