The European Investment Bank (EIB) remains a strategic partner for Romania's development, and the country is preparing several major financings in the near future, interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said.
"The European Investment Bank, a strategic partner for Romania's development," conveyed the minister who attended the EIB Board of Governors' meeting in Luxembourg, which brings together finance ministers from the 27 European Union member states, agerpres reports.
In a post on his Facebook page, he pointed out that the EIB is becoming increasingly important for Europe's competitiveness, economic security, energy, technology, critical infrastructure and defence, pointing out that in 2025 the institution signed new financings worth around 100 billion euro.
"This is a clear signal that Europe needs large-scale investments and instruments capable of attracting private capital," the interim Finance Minister added.
Alexandru Nazare underlined that Romania supports the continuation of financing for strategic European projects, "while maintaining standards of financial prudence and transparency," adding that this has a direct impact on the country.
"We cannot support all important projects solely from the national budget, especially in a period of fiscal consolidation. We need the EIB financing, European guarantees, financial instruments and partnerships that can bring more capital into the economy," the minister said.
He mentioned that Romania is working on several financings with the EIB. "In June, the first 100 million euro will be drawn, as an advance for the co-financing of the PNRR [the National Recovery and Resilience Plan] for two major railway projects, and in the second half of the year, depending on parliamentary approval and project progress, Romania may attract a new tranche for the Sibiu-Pitesti Motorway. Moreover, financings are being prepared for the Bucharest North Ring Road and for the refurbishment of Reactor 1 at Cernavoda," the quoted source added.
Interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare emphasised that international partnerships are essential for infrastructure and energy, as these investments "cannot be fully supported from the national budget."
Minister Nazare is in Luxembourg on 11-12 June 2026 to attend a series of European financial meetings.
According to a Finance Ministry release, his agenda includes the Eurogroup meeting in extended format, the annual meeting of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Board of Governors and the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) meeting.
