Internal Affairs Minister Catalin Predoiu said on Wednesday that road safety represents a "constant" priority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), adding that the new approach through the project called "Traffic safety" takes into account the interinstitutional collaboration for a unitary and efficient reaction, the integrated use of traffic data and information, the simplification of administrative processes and a correct, constant and accessible communication for the citizens.
"Traffic safety is a value, a social product, an objective, which doesn't depend solely on the actions of the MAI. This aspiration to improve traffic safety and flow relies on the contribution of several institutions, several authorities, from the ones managing road infrastructure to local communities, through the representatives of these communities, institutions of these communities, collective or individual, cooperating together, working with the resources that they have, with the information that they have so that all efforts are integrated, including our own," Predoiu said at the MAI headquarters.
The minister mentioned that authorities, together with the citizens, can transform traffic safety into a lasting value for the entire society.
The "Traffic safety" project proposes a package of measures which bring together technology, updated legislation and institutional collaboration, all with a clear purpose - safer roads and simpler public services for citizens, according to Secretary of State with the MAI Bogdan Despescu.
He said on Tuesday, at the launching of the project, which is developed by the MAI through the Romanian Police, that it supports a national effort for responsibility, education, prevention and digitalization.
According to the statistics, in 2024, the number of persons who died in road accidents was 1,478, and those seriously injured stood at 3,245, while in 2025 there have been 940 fatalities and 2,352 serious injuries recorded so far.
Despescu mentioned that "Traffic safety" project is part of the road traffic monitoring system introduced by the Romanian Police at the beginning of 2025 in order to reduce accidents and identify drivers who do not observe road safety regulations.
