Romanian tennis player Irina Begu qualified for the round of 16 at the WTA 125 tournament in Parma (Italy), which has total prize money of 100,000 euros, after defeating Andorran player Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 7-6 (7/3).
Begu (34 years old, WTA No. 83) prevailed after a marathon match lasting three hours and 32 minutes of actual play.
Jimenez Kasintseva (19 years old, WTA No. 134) committed no fewer than 11 double faults in this match.
In the first set, Begu led 3-1 and 4-2, then saved a set point at 4-5, missed a set point at 6-5 in the tiebreak, but eventually lost it 6-8. The Romanian dominated the second set, winning it 6-1. In the decider, Begu pulled ahead briefly to 5-3, but her opponent came back to tie the score. Begu missed a match point at 6-5 but controlled the tiebreak and won it 7-3.
Irina Begu secured a check for 1,740 euros and 15 WTA points, and in the round of 16, she will face either Austrian Julia Grabher or Latvian Darja Semenistaja.
Also on Monday, Patricia Tig (30 years old, WTA No. 218) qualified for the main singles draw after defeating Italian Arianna Zucchini (21 years old, WTA No. 620) 6-2, 7-5 in the qualifiers, after nearly two hours of play (1 hour 51 minutes).
Tig secured a check of 1,085 euros and 7 WTA points, and in the first round, she will face Mexican Renata Zarazua (27 years old, WTA No. 69), the sixth seed.
