Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu said on Friday that in 2024 over 61,000 criminal cases have been registered nationwide in Romania that involved violent crimes.
"Over 61,000 criminal cases have been registered nationwide that involved acts of violence, such as crimes against sexual life, bodily injury, threats, harassment, violation of private life. In Arges, (...) statistics for the first half of 2024 show that there are almost 6,500 cases in progress, of which 1,700 for acts committed this year. I confess that I would have liked the situation to be different, not to have any file on the docket of the prosecutors' offices, on the docket of the courts regarding acts of violence, but this is the society in which we live and which we have to educate together," Gorghiu told the release of a guide on how to report acts of violence and sexual harassment.
According to her, the guide completes "a long series" of measures that she has taken at the Justice Ministry of Justice in support of victims and for their protection.
The ministry has developed and published a guide in which it presents where, how, when and to whom victims of violence and sexual harassment can turn.
"Take a moment to take a break and read the guide on the rights of victims of sexual violence and harassment. That is how you help yourself when needed, you help a colleague and any other victim of violence or sexual abuse or of any other nature. The Ministry of Justice has developed this guide in a very simple form, in a form accessible to all of you. The guide will be published today [September 16] on the website of the Ministry of Justice and will show where, how, when and to whom you can report, what the legislation is and what rights you have. There are laws, there are levers, there are instruments that support and defend any victim in Romania. It takes a lot of courage on anyone's part to address the authorities. I urge you not to remain indifferent, we all have to help a victim in difficulty," Gorghiu said in a social media video post.
