Minister of Justice Alina Gorghiu said in Oradea on Saturday that there are 65,000 registered sex offenders in Romania.

"It is for the first time that the number of people who are in this Register is being said in public. It is very important that we have them registered, identified, because they now have a number of restrictions. Any institution in the education system, health, social protection, any public and private entity, whose activity involves direct contact with children, the elderly, people with disabilities, before entering into a working relationship with someone must ask those who administer the Register for this certificate of behavioural integrity," Alina Gorghiu told AGERPRES.

According to her, the law on the National Automated Register of people who have committed sexual offences was adopted in 2019. Since then, the Romanian state has registered 65,000 sex offenders.

The Minister of Justice attended on Saturday the North-West regional meeting of the Organisation of Liberal Women (OFL), together with the National Liberal Party (PNL) Secretary General Lucian Bode, OFL Chair Nicoleta Pauliuc (PNL Senator), OFL Bihor Chair Arina Mos (PNL Senator), a meeting attended by 350 participants from Satu Mare, Maramures, Bistrita-Nasaud, Cluj and Bihor counties.

Alina Gorghiu talked about several projects, starting with the extension of the protection order to any act of violence committed by any person in Romania, not only by family members, the Register of drug traffickers, on the model of the register of people who commit sexual offences, and, as a first, she announced that, at present, the Register of sex offenders has reached 65,000 registered persons.

"Those registered as sex offenders are subject to a number of restrictions, such as reporting regularly to the police, no later than once every 3 months, to provide them with information on their profession, trade or activity, means of existence, notify the police if they intend to travel away from their place of residence for more than 15 days, are photographed annually, etc.," said Alina Gorghiu.
