Russia is using its communication space as a tool for hybrid warfare, whether it takes the form of propaganda or disinformation, Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) Spokesman Andrei Tarnea told AGERPRES on Tuesday.

He reacted on the night of Monday to Tuesday on X to a message published on the same platform by an account attributed to Aleksandr Dugin.

"So predictable! Considering that Romanians recently celebrated the Great Union, yesterday we are reminded that Russia did not recognise this Union. It did so with resentment, as a result of Romania's sovereign will and the pressure from Western powers. The same willpower will make Russia fail again," wrote the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson on X.

According to Tarnea, the account on the X platform where the post was made is "known for being used for Russian propaganda and disinformation and has been active for a long time."

"It is irrelevant whether this account belongs to Dugin or not, because Aleksandr Dugin has no official position anyway, so practically, everything he says is a form of trolling. Normally, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we ignore this type of post, we do not react to them, but yesterday's post went viral, it was widely shared in the media and on social media in Romania, so my reaction was primarily aimed at this aspect and not at Dugin, whose statements have no authority or significance," Andrei Tarnea explained.

He mentioned that the MAE's response is a substantive one.

"We simply took the opportunity to bring to mind that Russia, in its multiple modern historical declinations, has systematically and persistently tried to limit Romania's sovereignty and that of the Romanians. It did this during the Great Union, not recognising the sovereign historical act of the Romanian people. It took the peace of 1919 and the accumulated pressure of Romanian popular will and the support of Western countries for Russia to recognize Romania. Therefore, this is the mechanism. We simply used the viralisation of this message and the public interest it sparked to respond to a substantive issue, not to Dugin," Tarnea explained.

The MAE spokesperson said that Russia is conducting and will continue to conduct a campaign of "poisoning" and "disinformation."

"Russia is using the communication space as a tool for hybrid warfare, whether it takes the form of propaganda or disinformation. We saw this after 2014 and the first invasion and illegal annexation of territories from a sovereign neighbour, Ukraine, but we have seen especially after February 2022 an exponential increase in this type of activity and, especially, a fusion between official public communication activities, media from the Russian Federation, and unofficial disinformation and propaganda channels. Therefore, we expect this epidemic of poisoning and disinformation to continue," Andrei Tarnea said.

"Romania will be part of Russia," reads an account on X platform attributed to Aleksandr Dugin, the ideologist of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Where wokeists and elite of Democrats can flee from US? Canada? Trudeau was recently at Mar-o-Lago. Israel? There is a war. London, Paris, Dubai? Exactly where Russian liberals have fled. Or Moldova? That will be part of Romania soon. But Romania will be part of Russia," reads the message posted on X.

Aleksandr Dugin's name and photo appear on the account in question, @Agdchan.
