The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said on Saturday that "Romania plays an essential role in supporting efforts to strengthen Republic of Moldova's energy independence".

The Moldovan leader told a press conference held alongside Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, that her country is "grateful to Romania for its support in strengthening the Republic of Moldova's resilience".

"Romania plays an essential role in supporting our efforts to strengthen the Republic of Moldova's energy independence. The construction of the Isaccea - Vulcanesti - Chisinau overhead power line is in full swing, and work on the Suceava - Balti line will start soon. These lines will connect the Republic of Moldova's electricity grid to the Romanian one and to the European market. Since 2021, when the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline was put into operation, Moldova no longer depends on a single natural gas supplier and can ensure the consumption needs of its citizens on the right bank of the Dniester by buying gas on the European market," said Maia Sandu.

The Moldovan President also expressed her appreciation for Romania's contribution to the construction of five new road bridges across the Prut: the ones at Ungheni, Costesti - Stanca, Leova - Bumbata, Leca - Falciu and Barboieni - Raducaneni, adding that these investments will further connect the two countries.

At the same time, Maia Sandu showed her gratitude for Romania's support in the field of education.

"In the field of education, we are grateful for the scholarships offered by Romania to young people from the Republic of Moldova and for Romania's contribution to the study of Romanian language in ethnic communities and in the diaspora. Just yesterday, the first 40 of the 69 school buses purchased with Romania's support were distributed. More than 2,000 pupils from all regions of the country will benefit from them as of Monday (...) Over the years, Romania has invested a lot in the local development of the Republic of Moldova, repairing over 1,000 kindergartens all over the country and financing over 30 projects within the 'European Village' programme," the president of the neighboring country underlined.

Maia Sandu also mentioned that "Romania continues to be the strongest supporter of the Republic of Moldova on the international scene, firmly backing our European path".

"The launch of accession negotiations with the European Union in June this year would not have been possible without Romania's constant and full support. Romania managed to enter the previous wave of the European Union's enlargement, becoming an EU member in 2007. I would have liked us to be together in the European family since then. Now we have a historic opportunity and it is Moldova's turn to follow this path, and Romania's experience will be very useful to us in this journey," President Maia Sandu added.

President Iohannis is paying an official visit to Chisinau on Saturday, at the invitation of President Maia Sandu, which is taking place in the context of Romania and the Republic of Moldova celebrating the Romanian Language Day.
