Romania's meat production increased in April 2025 for most animal and livestock species compared to the previous month, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The exception was beef production, which fell by 4%.
Compared to the similar month in 2024, in April 2025, meat production rose in all animal species and livestock.
Thus, in April 2025, 333,000 pigs were slaughtered, a decrease of 11.74% compared to March 2025, when 298,000 animals were slaughtered. Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of slaughterings was up 7.77% (from 309,000 head). Pork production totaled 31,093 tonnes in April 2025, up 11.16% from March 2025 and 11.52% from the similar month in 2024.
Poultry meat production increased in April 2025 both compared to the previous month, by 26.55%, and compared to the same month in 2024, by 1.56%.
Data shows that 30.703 million heads were slaughtered in April 2025, an increase of 24.34% compared to the previous month (24.692 million head) and 2.92% compared to April 2024 (29.833 million head).
As for beef production, it totaled 6,394 tonnes in April this year, down by 4% compared to March, when production was recorded at 6,661 tonnes of carcass. Compared with April 2024, when 6,309 carcass tonnes were recorded, there was an increase of 1.35%.
During the period under review, the number of cattle slaughtered reached 38,000 heads, down 2.56% from 39,000 in March 2025. Compared to April 2024, the number was unchanged.
Sheep and goat carcass weights increased dramatically in April 2025 compared to the previous month. Thus, sheep and goat meat production was 44,032 tonnes in April, almost 16 times higher than in March, when 2,825 tonnes were recorded. Compared to April 2024, production was up 11.53%.
According to INS, 4.064 million sheep and goats were slaughtered in April 2025, up from 221,000 animals in March. In April 2024, the number of sheep and goats slaughtered totaled 3.727 million.
