The Romanian men's national handball team qualified for the final tournament of the European Championship - EHF EURO 2026, in a dramatic fashion, after being defeated by Poland, 30-29 (15-14), on Sunday evening, in Gorzow Wielkopolski, in the last match of the Group 8 of the preliminaries.
The final of the match was a close one, with the Romanian losing by the limit, after leading 27-26. Poland had 24-20, but the Romanians managed to score five consecutive goals.
Romania could have missed the qualification, but Portugal defeated Israel, 34-33, in Constanta, through a goal scored in the last second.
For Romania, Daniel Stanciuc scored 10 goals, Andrei Buzle 5, Calin Dedu 4, Alexandru George Andrei 3, Dan Racotea 2, Tudor Botea 2, Ionut Nistor Ionita 1, Andras Szasz 1, Ionut Adrian Stanescu 1.
The Polish goals were scored by Michal Daszek 8, Andrzej Widomski 6, Michal Olejniczak 6, Piotr Jedraszczyk 3, Mikolaj Czaplinski 3, Maciej Gebala 2, Pawel Paterek 1, Damian Przytula 1.
Portugal ranks first in the group, with 9 points, followed by Poland, 6 points, Romania, 5 points, and Israel, 4 points.
The top two ranked teams from the eight groups, as well as the four best third-place teams, qualify for the final tournament.
The final tournament will take place in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, between January 15 and February 1, 2026.
