Minsiter-delegate Negrescu meets EU's Brexit chief negotiator Barnier; Romanians' rights, post-Brexit developments on agenda

Romania's Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu met on Tuesday with EU's Brexit chief negotiator Michel Barnier, who is paying an official visit to Bucharest, a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) sent to Agerpres informs.

The two officials' discussions mainly focused on the negotiation process regarding the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, as well as on concrete aspects of the collaboration between the Romanian authorities and the structure led by Michel Barnier, in view of Romania taking over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2019.

Minister-delegate Negrescu hailed the European Commission's efforts, mentioning that Romania will further act, in this last stage of negotiations, with full responsibility towards the obligations deriving from the membership to the European Union and in the spirit of loyalty to the other 26 member states.

"Our priority is to protect the rights of the Romanians living, working or studying in the UK. We will remain in permanent contact with the European Commission's team of negotiators, in order to ensure that all the categories of citizens will be able to exercise their rights in full accordance with the provisions included in the withdrawal agreement," Victor Negrescu underscored, as quoted in the release.

Moreover, the Romanian official referred to the stage of preparations at internal level so that Romania takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU, a mandate during which the UK's actual withdrawal from the EU is scheduled to complete.

"Romania firmly endorses a withdrawal agreement that will reflect the unity of member states and the priorities took on by the European Union, through the mandate of chief-negotiator, but we are ready for any of the possible scenarios regarding the development of negotiations. As the future Presidency of the Council of the EU, we are tightly collaborating with European institutions and Austrian partners, for a good coordination of actions and measures deriving from this process. Moreover, we will further consult and inform the Romanian citizens in relation with the British authorities and the new conditions generated by Brexit," Negrescu added
