Monthly average income stands at 10,204 lei per household in Q2 2026; expenditure totals 8,650 lei

Monthly average income per household stood at 10,204 lei in Q2 of 2026, up 8% from Q1 of 2026 in nominal terms, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Wednesday.

Compared with Q2 of 2025, total monthly average household income increased by 7.4%, while income per person rose by 10.4% to 4,222 lei.

Monthly average income per household stood at 9,748 lei, up 8.4% from Q1 of 2026, while income in kind reached 456 lei, up 1.7%.

Gross wages and other salary rights were the main source of income, at 7,354 lei per household per month, accounting for 72.1% of total income. Income from social benefits amounted to 2,005 lei per household, accounting for 19.6% of total income.

In urban areas, total monthly average income stood at 11,118 lei per household, 1.2 times higher than in rural areas. Per person, average income was 4,997 lei in urban areas and 3,405 lei in rural areas.

Total monthly average expenditure per household stood at 8,650 lei, or 3,579 lei per person, accounting for 84.8% of total income. Compared with Q1 of 2026, expenditure increased by 635 lei per household, while compared with Q2 of 2025, it was 7.6% higher.

Cash expenditure stood at 8,279 lei per household, up 8.2% from Q1, while the value of consumption of food and non-food agricultural products from own resources was 371 lei, up 2.3%.

The main destinations of household expenditure were consumption, at 4,936 lei per household per month, accounting for 57% of the total, and taxes, contributions, subscriptions and fees, which amounted to 3,159 lei, or 36.5%. Expenditure related to household production stood at 119 lei, accounting for 1.4% of the total.

As regards consumption expenditure, food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for the largest category, at 1,581 lei per household, or 32% of total consumption expenditure. This was followed by expenditure on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, at 813 lei, clothing and footwear, at 390 lei, and transport, at 376 lei.

In urban areas, average total monthly expenditure stood at 9,437 lei per household, while in rural areas it was approximately 1.2 times lower. Per person, expenditure was 4,241 lei in urban areas and 2,881 lei in rural areas.
