The Romanian mountain rescuers helped three Ukrainian citizens who crossed the Romanian border through the Maramuresului Mountains, the head of the Maramures County Mountain Rescue Service, Dan Benga, told Agerpres on Wednesday evening.

According to him, one of the three Ukrainian citizens managed to come down from the mountains alone, while the mountain rescuers reached the other two and granted them medical assistance as they suffered from hypothermia and frostbite.

"The mountain rescuers reached the Ukrainians just now. One of the three managed to come down alone and is now in the custody of the authorities. The other two are still up there, one of them suffering from frostbite, with both his hands and feet being affected, while both suffer from hypothermia, which forces the mountain rescuers to try to reach an abandoned shepfold a few metres down, where they can make a fire for the two Ukrainians to warm up. Then, depending on the evolution of the two health condition, the mountain rescuers will decide whether to come down from the mountain or stay at the shepfold for the night," said the representative of the Maramures Mountain Rescue Service.

According to the same source, the three Ukrainians have been in the mountains for a few days already, with the snow layer reaching 40 centimetres in this period and the temperatures coming down to minus 10 degrees Celsius during the night.
