There will be optimal conditions for seasonal agricultural works in Romania as moisture reserve in the soil layer 0-20 cm deep will fall within satisfactory limits, close to optimal and even optimal in most of the country, according to the agrometeorological forecast issued by the National Weather Administration (ANM) for October 24 - 30.

On the other hand, on large agricultural areas in Oltenia, partially in the west, south-west and south of Muntenia, the water content in the soil will be low and particularly low defined as moderate and strong soil drought.

Field crops and vineyards will be generally normal in most agricultural areas, and in the depressions in the northern and central parts of the country, the biological processes of plants will be slowed down.

"Autumn cereals (barley and wheat) sown in September and early October will go through the germination-sprouting phases (20-100%) in most of the growing areas and locally the appearance of the first leaves (10-50%) in the southern and western parts of the country. Depending on sowing date and pedoclimatic conditions, rapeseed will rise (20-100%) and rosettes of 5-8 leaves are to be expected. In the central, eastern and western parts of the country, sugar beet foliage is about to dry and maturity is expected (70-100%), as well as harvesting on large agricultural areas," say ANM specialists.

The vine and tree species will continue to ripen their fruit, the budding and fall of the leaves, while the harvest of seasonal fruits (apples, pears, plums, quince) will continue. Also, the wood maturation process will generally proceed normally, ensuring a good resistance to wintering.

The specialists are recommending completing the harvesting, transport, storage and land clearance of plant debris; ploughing and preparing a well-groomed and homogeneous seedbed for good plant uniformity and density; applying nitrogen and phosphorus-based fertilisers to autumn cereal crops; speeding up the sowing of barley and winter wheat in order to fit into the optimal season, so that the sown crops enjoy the thermal resources necessary to fully complete vernalisation and wintering.

ANM also says that temperatures will be higher overall than usually in almost all regions. The average daytime air temperature will be between 5 - 17 degrees Celsius.

Air highs will be between 13 and 23 degrees Celsius, in most of the growing areas, while lows will hover around -3 and 12 degrees Celsius on most agricultural areas, with lower values expected in eastern Transylvania, where mist will occur.

The average diurnal temperature of the soil at a depth of 10 cm will be between 8 and 14 degrees Celsius in the plains, favourable for the growth and development of plants, especially in the autumn sowing carried out in the optimal time.
