Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Wednesday that the limitation of cash payments by individuals is aimed at combating tax evasion, not at the prohibition of cash.
Ciolacu gave himself as an example, saying that he does not have a "money-making jacket", but that he does have cash in the car, agerpres reports.
The prime minister also explained that this is a proposal from experts of the Finance Ministry and not a personal initiative, adding that the project was submitted to public debate and pleading for an "honest approach" thereto. He also said that the proposal is not "a disaster" and that no one wants to take the cash off the market.
According to Ciolacu, Romania has "the highest tax evasion" in the European Union, standing at 10 percent of GDP, or a total of 160 billion RON.
