I believe in the idea of everybody's Europe, of a European Romania. I believe in a common future built on the ideals we share. I believe in unity and solidarity. And I also believe that national values are protected and even strengthened by the idea of diversity proposed by the European Union, affirms Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, in the message transmitted to agerpres. by the Government on the occasion of May 9th.
"Today we mark three fundamental historical moments: 140 years since Romania proclaimed its independence, Europe Day and the Victory of the United Nations Coalition in the Second World War," the prime minister adds.
The Chief of the Executive talks about the significance of each anniversary. Thus, recollects Sorin Grindeanu, "May 9th, 1877 represented the fundamental step in consolidating Romania as an independent and unitary state." "Respect for the courage and determination of our forefathers who, with the thought of future generations in mind, have contributed to the creation of the modern Romanian state," he states.
The Prime Minister also adds that on March 9th "We honour the sacrifice of heroes, simple or state people, who aspired to a new world, cured by the passion of the conflict, and contributed through their sacrifice to the end of last century's history bloodiest page - the Second World War."
"Today we celebrate Europe Day, with confidence in the future of the European design and assuming Romania's constructive role in this project," the head of the Executive further says.
He points out that "Europe today is very different from the one 67 years ago when the Schuman Declaration was signed".
"I am convinced that we have the capacity that through this first mandate (the presidency of the Council of the European Union in early 2019) our country make a decisive contribution to the strengthening and continuity of the European project," the head of the Government states, mentioning that ever since Romania has became a member of the Union, after decades of totalitarianism that have isolated us from European democracies, the Romanians have made important steps to transforming society for the benefit of its citizens."
