The visit of OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann to Bucharest, on the occasion of the launch of the 2026 Economic Survey, reconfirms the organization's support for Romania's path towards OECD accession this year, the Presidential Administration said.
President Nicusor Dan on Monday received the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace. The meeting took place in the context of Secretary-General Cormann's official visit to Romania for the launch of the 2026 Economic Survey for the country, prepared by the OECD Secretariat.
The talks between the two officials addressed the advanced stage of Romania's accession process to the Organisation, the conclusions of the 2026 Economic Survey and relevant international developments, informed the Presidential Administration
President Nicusor Dan highlighted the importance of this year's edition of the Economic Survey for Romania, noting that it provides a comprehensive analysis of the development directions of the national economy, and reconfirmed the broad political commitment to the strategic objective of joining the OECD in 2026, based on the substantial reforms adopted. Membership of the organisation bringing together the world's most developed economies will support Romania "particularly in attracting foreign investment, securing more advantageous financing on international markets, modernising public administration and developing policies based on reliable data".
The Romanian head of state also thanked Secretary-General Cormann for the support provided during this process and highlighted Romania's active involvement in the Organisation's activities, including with a view to obtaining full membership.
OECD Economic Surveys are periodic analyses, carried out every two years, of the economies of the Organisation's member states, as well as partner and candidate countries.
The launch of the 2026 edition of the Economic Survey is the result of the drafting process carried out in close cooperation with OECD experts and the relevant institutions of Romania's public administration. The document offers a balanced overview of the country's macroeconomic and structural policies and includes public policy recommendations on macroeconomic developments, the labour market, strengthening resilience to climate risks and boosting competitiveness. Previous editions of the Economic Survey were launched in January 2022 and March 2024, both in the presence of Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.
The drafting of the 2026 Economic Survey complements the sectoral recommendations issued by OECD committees and is aimed at aligning Romania's practices, policies and legislation with the Organisation's standards.
