Romanian Prime Minister Mihai Tudose on Thursday stated that the United States of America are and must remain the main strategic ally of Romania, both in military and economic terms.

Asked whether the reaction of the USA regarding the justice laws is a justified one in his opinion, Tudose said: "I believe that USA are and must remain the strategic ally of Romania and I don't mean here only on the military side, but also in economic terms. There are many very large companies that are coming to invest in Romania and next year will be a spectacular one from this viewpoint, I hope. Everything that we discussed this year it will start to become reality next year. So, I say this again, USA are not just a military partner to us, but also an economic partner and our main strategic ally."

On Monday, the spokesperson of the US State Department, Heather Nauert, told a pres statement entitled "Romania - proposals that affect the independence of the judiciary" that "the USA is concerned with the fact that the Romanian Parliament considers a law package that could undermine the fight against corruption and weaken the independence of the judiciary system."

This legislation, "initially proposed by the Ministry of Justice threatens the progress Romania has made in the recent years to build strong judiciary institutions protected by the political interface," said the spokesperson in his statement published on the Website of the State Department. The United States "urges the Romanian Parliament to reject the proposals that weaken the rule of law state and endanger the fight against corruption," added the spokesperson.
