The National Liberal Party (PNL) is calling on the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to publicly retract its "manipulation" regarding the budget deficit and "present the figures accurately," arguing that clarifications from the Ministry of Finance contradict the "false interpretation" of Eurostat indicators promoted by the Social Democrats, according to Agerpres.

The Liberals argue that the PSD is "planting false evidence" and creating "alibis" for the failure of its governance, its failure to honour "populist promises" and its failure to meet the deficit target.

"The National Liberal Party calls on the PSD to publicly retract its manipulation regarding the budget deficit, withdraw the release published on the party's official page and present the figures accurately. The clarifications issued by the Ministry of Finance on Thursday contradict the false interpretation promoted by the PSD and clarify the meaning of the indicators published by Eurostat. We warn the PSD that the lies spread by the only party in government may have serious consequences for Romania's credibility. Such actions create confusion on financial markets and the business community, which have so far received accurate information that Romania's budget deficit has fallen significantly over the past 16 months," the a PNL release issued on Friday informed.

The Liberals reiterated that "Romania's budget deficit stood at 2% of GDP at mid-year and the country is on track to meet its budget deficit target for this year - unless the PSD derails it again."

"The results of the budget adjustment are also confirmed by the three international rating agencies which are assessing Romania. Two of them forecast a deficit even lower than Prime Minister Bolojan's Government target of 6.2% of GDP: Moody's forecasts 5.8% and Fitch 5.9%, while S&P forecasts a deficit of 6.25% of GDP. These assessments confirm that efforts to reduce the budget deficit are recognised internationally," the PNL also said.

According to the quoted source, "the PSD's action yesterday was clearly malicious and intended to manipulate."

"The PSD could have asked the Finance Minister for the figures if it did not trust the rating agencies, which have presented their findings recently," the Liberals said.

The PNL believes that if the PSD refuses to retract the "lies it has promoted," the conclusion will be that "the new government is preparing to send the budget deficit soaring in the coming months."

"What is happening now is, in fact, the planting of false evidence and the creation of alibis for the failure of governance, for the failure to honour the PSD's populist promises and for missing the deficit target. The PSD must abandon its manipulation tactics and get on with governing, genuinely assume its responsibilities and prepare Romania's budget for the next year as soon as possible. Any delay in adopting the next budget will have negative consequences for both the business community and the country's citizens," the Liberals also conveyed.

On Thursday, the PSD conveyed that the data published by Eurostat show the Bolojan Government leaving behind a deficit of 9.2% of GDP (seasonally adjusted), the highest in the European Union and significantly above the deficit of 7.7% of GDP recorded by the Ciolacu Government at the end of the second quarter of 2025.

"The light has been shed on Bolojan's deficit: the highest in the European Union and far above the deficit left by the Marcel Ciolacu Government. Eurostat has shed light on the deficit left by the Bolojan Government! Data published on 21 October show that the Bolojan Government is leaving behind a deficit of 9.2% of GDP (seasonally adjusted data), the highest in the European Union and significantly above the deficit of 7.7% of GDP recorded by the Ciolacu Government at the end of the second quarter of 2025. The explosion in the deficit at the end of the Bolojan Government's term, from 5.5% in the first quarter of this year to 9.2% in the second quarter, shows the former prime minister's attempt to conceal the scale of the disaster," according to a PSD release.
