PNL says PSD has decided to "deepen" and "prolong" the political crisis by refusing to support a government led by Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan.
According to a PNL statement, the Social Democrats' arguments are "manipulative and, in part, false".
"The National Liberal Party notes that the PSD leadership has decided to deepen and prolong the political crisis, with risks for Romania, by refusing to support a government led by Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan, on the basis of arguments that are manipulative and, in part, false. For more than four months, the PSD leadership has proved incapable of finding a solution to the crisis it triggered, and is now instructing Social Democratic MPs to reject a sound solution for the country decided by the president of Romania," the PNL statement reads.
The Liberals argue that, "if it were acting in good faith and concerned with the country's interests", PSD should have decided whether to back the investiture of a Muresan government only after examining its governing programme, the team proposed by the prime minister-designate and concrete solutions to the problems facing the country.
"Romania is going through a difficult period, and prolonged political uncertainty carries additional risks. The budget revision, the draft 2027 budget, energy price developments, the continued absorption of European funds and the regional security situation are issues that require a government with full powers," PNL said.
According to the Liberals, "by rejecting a new government on populist grounds, thereby prolonging the crisis and promising a return to the irresponsible policies of previous years, PSD is assuming the risk of a downgrade to Romania's sovereign credit rating".
"Under these circumstances, PNL believes that all responsible parliamentary parties have an obligation to carefully examine the programme and composition of the proposed government, as well as the consequences of prolonging the crisis, before making a final decision on the investiture vote. PNL supports the prime minister-designate's efforts to present the governing programme and list of ministers within the constitutional deadline," the party said.
PSD's National Standing Bureau decided on Monday not to support the government to be formed by Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan.
PSD chairman Sorin Grindeanu said the recommendation not to support the Muresan government would be submitted to the National Political Council, the party's statutory decision-making body on the matter.
"Today's decision was taken unanimously," Grindeanu said at PSD headquarters.
