Poll: 68.1% of Romanians consider an opportunity immigrants coming to work in Romania

An opinion poll by INSCOP Research shows that most Romanians consider that immigrants who come to Romania to find a job are an opportunity for the country because they help the economy by taking over those jobs not taken by Romanians, while a much smaller percentage view them as a threat to employment.

As many as 68.1% of the respondents say that immigrants who come to Romania to find a job are an opportunity for the country because they help the economy by taking over those jobs not taken by Romanians; 25.1% of Romanians are of the opinion that immigrants who come to Romania seeking employment are a threat to the country because they take the jobs of Romanians, who are forced to go abroad seeking employment, while 6.8% did not know or did not answer.

A breakdown by age show that immigrants as an opportunity for Romania because they help the economy by taking over jobs not taken by Romanians is shared by 78.5% of people between 18 and 29 years old; 67.0% of those aged between 30 and 44 years old; 61.6% of those aged between 45 and 59 years old, and 69.6% of those over 60 years old. This opinion is shared by 47.3% of people with a primary education background, 74.3% of those with a secondary education background and 77.8% of people with a higher education background, as well as by 80.6% of the inhabitants of Bucharest City, 72.3% of the inhabitants of large urban areas, 75.6% of the inhabitants of small urban areas and 60.1% of rural residents, INSCOP Research reveals.

The opinion poll also shows that 67.4% of the respondents agree with granting financial incentives to Romanians abroad in order for them to return to the country, while 31.5% are against such an idea and 1.1% did not know or did not answer.

Asked what is the most important thing about feeling free, 33.1% of respondents chose the option "my own freedom should not affect the freedom of others", 20.5% "to have as many rights and freedoms as possible (of expression, voting, association, respect for private life)," 16% "to live in a society without discrimination of ethnicity, race, religion, age or sex."

The option "to have the possibility to make decisions without any external constraint" is shared by 11.4% of respondents and the option "to live in a society where I am not afraid of oppression" by 10.1%. 8.8% did not know or did not answer the question, and 0.1% indicated something else.

The opinion poll was conducted by INSCOP Research, commissioned by the Institute for Freedom and Democracy. The data were collected between September 11-16, 2024 using the CATI method (telephone interviews), comprising 1,102 people, representative of the significant socio-demographic categories (sex, age, occupation) for the non-institutionalised population of Romania, aged 18 years and over. The poll carries a +/- 2.95% margin of error and a confidence level of 95%
