President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday stated that "it's obvious there is a problem with the budget," since the Government announced it is preparing an Ordinance to increase taxes.

"If the PSD [the Social Democratic Party] announced several months ago that it won't introduce any new taxes and fees and now, at the end of the year, it drops an Emergency Ordinance entitled "miscellaneous," because it really mixes all kinds of things there, in order to take money from the private economy, it is obvious that there is a problem with the budget. How else it could be explained that we are now at the end of the year and we do not have a draft budget. The law stipulates a very clear term for that: until November 15 of every year, the Government has the obligation to present before Parliament the draft budget for next year. The Government chose to ignore this mandatory legal provision. And the conclusion is: they do not have money, they don't know where to take money from and they are inventing all kinds of taxes and fees. This is a totally wrong approach of the PSD," said Iohannis, on Wednesday, at a press conference held at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace after the CSAT (Supreme Council for National Defence) meeting.

The journalists asked the President if he discussed with the Minister of Finance or if he had other information related to this new GEO, which he criticizes, in the context in which he warned at some point there are no revenues to the budget and he wondered if the Government still has enough money to pay for the pensions and salaries.

About the fact that he was also criticized, in his turn, for some missing approvals for the institutions under the umbrella of the CSAT, Iohannis replied: "You can see that the approvals were given with celerity."

When ask if, given the current circumstances, he believed the budget can still meet the legal deadline and reach Parliament, the President specified: "The budget could have been pushed forward as early as November 1. I didn't do anything, I had no intention to block such an important project and the CSAT approval was given immediately after being asked."
