President Klaus Iohannis stated, on Tuesday, that the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area will contribute in an essential way to consolidating the Single Market and strengthening the resilience of the European Union in its entirety.
The head of state had tete-a-tete talks and official talks with his Bulgarian counterpart, Rumen Radev, who is conducting a working visit to Romania.
"We have also approached the objective of our countries with regard to advancing the accession to the Schengen Area. Our accession will contribute essentially to the consolidation of the Single Market and increasing the resilience of the Union in its entirety, which is all the more necessary in the current context, marked by multiple crises. The measures adopted by the Romanian authorities in managing the border in the current context of the refugee flow from Ukraine have proven, once more, that Romania is efficiently applying the common standards that regard the Schengen acquis," Klaus Iohannis said, during the joint press conference with the Bulgarian President.
President Iohannis said that he agreed with President Radev to maintain close coordination on the matter in the coming period.
