President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday stated that Romania is confronted with this fake news phenomenon more and more often, underscoring that "even yesterday we had such an example of parade."
"We are dealing increasingly often with threats specific to the current context, which risk endangering even the democracy and the rule of law - the fake news phenomenon - we had such an example of parade even yesterday. Manipulation of any kind of the information of public interest and the increased populism that manipulates people with lies and improbable promises are possible dangers to democracy," said the head of state at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, at the conference "Education Rewrites the Story" - the 5th year anniversary of Teach for Romania.
The head of the state gave as an example certain politicians' statements according to which the European Union is guilty for the various problems in Romania.
"We have heard in the recent period how EU is to be blamed for the various problems we have in Romania. In fact, such statements only tell how the politicians try to hide their own failures and find a scapegoat. The risk is that, while not knowing enough about the relation between the Romanian state and the Union, some people will find these attacks credible. The only way to make ourselves immune to populism and demagogy is to educate our children and youngsters with respect to their rights, liberties and responsibilities, as well as with respect to the manner in which the state and economy work," specified the President.
He underscored that Teach for Romania is a very good example of an initiative based on volunteering.
