Accession to the OECD is one of the country's most important goals and will allow Romania to join some of the most developed countries in the world, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said, on Tuesday, at the meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the coordination of Romania's relations with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

According to a Government release, the participants analysed the stages completed so far, discussed elements regarding internal coordination, as well as the guidelines for the next period's priorities, as per the Roadmap approved for Romania. The national coordinator on Romania's accession to the OECD, Luca Niculescu, also participated in the meeting.

"After the OECD mission in Romania in June of this year, when our country officially entered the stage of extensive evaluation and analysis of the instruments included in the Roadmap, namely in the stage of the self-assessment development in relation to these tools, priority number one is now the drafting of the contributions to the Initial Memorandum that Romania must send to the Secretary-General of the OECD. The document includes an assessment of the alignment of Romania's legislation, policies and practices with a number of over 230 legal instruments of the OECD. In addition to completing the exercise of self-assessment of the OECD instruments by the institutions and, in particular, the integration of those in shared competence, other priorities of the following period are the finalization of the OECD teams at the level of the institutions and the active participation and at the appropriate level of representation in the OECD Sectoral Committees and in other OECD meetings," the press release states.

As regards the internal coordination of the accession process, it will take place in two work formats, both at the level of heads of institutions, led by the prime minister, in the format of the Inter-ministerial Committee for the coordination of Romania's relations with the OECD, and at the technical level, in the format of an inter-institutional Task Force.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Ciuca reminded that OECD accession is our country's top strategic priority and an opportunity for better public policies in the current difficult context, in which the attention given to development perspectives remains the engine of Romania's competitiveness and well-being for citizens.

"Joining the OECD represents one of the country's most important goals and will allow Romania to join some of the most developed countries in the world, thus offering the chance for economic development and the opening of numerous investment opportunities for Romania," pointed out Ciuca.AGERPRES
