Prince Radu said on Wednesday that the meeting with graduates of the 2024-2025 class of the Carol I National Defence University is dedicated to all the military from the Romania and the Republic of Moldova Armies, the armed forces of the European Union and NATO, "a big family that defends democracy and our freedoms".
Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown and and Prince Consort Radu hosted an event dedicated to Carol I National Defence University, at the Elisabeta Palace, which was attended by graduates of the 2024-2025 class, together with the university's leadership and teaching body.
"I would like you to know that I was keen for us to conclude this academic year at Elisabeta Palace, following our numerous meetings at the university, so that we pay tribute to you, both for your efforts in the field of university education and in the broader field of your military profession. For many years, the Royal Family has stood alongside all your predecessors, I believe that together we have crossed the threshold of a third century since we haven't parted ways, and together we have carried forward, each in our own way, Romania's welfare," said His Royal Highness.
Prince Radu emphasised that both Her Majesty Margareta and himself have increasingly understood, "especially in recent years", the importance of the military profession.
"And, because this is a difficult time in the world, I would like to say to you, before you spread your wings towards your individual destinies and the places where you will be professionally deployed, that Her Majesty and I, especially in recent years, have understood more and more how important your profession is. And although today you are in small numbers at the Palace, today's celebration is addressed to all your colleagues in the Romania's Army, the Republic of Moldova's Army, the armed forces of the European Union and NATO. It is a large family that guards our democracy and freedoms, and you are part of it with honour and pride. We wish you all the best and hope you continue on the right path from here on out," concluded Prince Radu.
In his turn, the commander (rector) of the Carol I National Defence University, Major General Eugen Mavris, pointed out that this year's graduating class is named 'Regina Maria 150' and pointed out that the event is attended by future graduates of the master's programme in leadership, i.e. future commanders who, in the coming years, will lead the Romanian Army and guide its destiny, as well as younger students who will be promoted to second lieutenant and will provide logistics for the army.
"The university is committed to modernisation and is making every effort to achieve this. We are trying not only in terms of digitalisation and infrastructure, but also in terms of educational content, because today, keeping up with everything that is happening means making an effort to change, an effort to continuously adapt. Those who are in school are asked to do more; they are asked to learn for the future, not for the present," said the rector.
He mentioned a series of university projects carried out with European funds, such as those dedicated to digitalisation, the renovation of the Central Pavilion, and the completion of a new sports hall.
Since 2012, the study programme of students at the National Defence University has included a meeting with members of the Royal Family at Elisabeta Palace, and this tradition has continued uninterrupted every year. Last year, Her Majesty Margareta and His Royal Highness Prince Radu visited the University on the occasion of its 135th anniversary, founded during the reign of King Carol I.
