Several dozen people protested on Friday evening, in front of the Government seat, against special pensions, as part of an action by the Declic Community, together with "Corruption Kills" and "Initiative Romania", under the slogan "We want equal rights, no special pensions!".
Those present called for holding a constitutional referendum to eliminate special pensions and displayed banners with messages against the privileges received by magistrates.
They chanted slogans such as "Magistrates, not aristocrats"; "Young pensioner - clear privilege"; "Cut, cut special pensions"; "Special pensioners are not the main thing"; "Please excuse us, we do not work as much as you earn" or "Pension for old age, not for youth".
Protests were also organized by local initiatives in Timisoara, Iasi, Pitesti and Arad on Friday.
Civic organizations are demanding a real reform of special pensions, by applying the contributory principle to all pensions in Romania.
"The politicians' double standard hurts more than the budget hole. The government and the president are asking magistrates to accept pensions 'only' 15 times higher than the average pension in Romania, while ordinary people have had to endure the 'anti-crisis' measures immediately. The Government is patient with magistrates, granting them a 10-15 year transition until the law is implemented, while ordinary pensioners have been finding out from one month to the next that they are going to lose 10% of their pensions. This is not reform, it is the protection of privileges," a release from civic organizations states.
According to the initiators of the protest, while privileges remain protected, the rest of the citizens are forced to bear the anti-crisis measures: tax increases, income cuts for ordinary pensioners, additional taxation for mothers on parental leave and reduced scholarships for students.
One of the proposed solutions is the introduction of the principle "each receives according to how much they contributed", the cited source mentioned.
