The road bridge over the Tisza River, which will link Romania and Ukraine, is nearly complete and opening could take place next year, Maramures County Council President Gabriel Zetea said on Thursday.

"Today, at the Tisza Bridge in the Teplita area [on the outskirts of Sighetu Marmatiei] we have reached 96 percent physical progress. We are very close to completing a project that many have awaited for years: a modern, safe border point ready for international traffic, which will be highly significant economically for Maramures," Gabriel Zetea wrote on Facebook.

According to him, the builders have worked intensively in recent weeks in order to install technical facilities.

Maramures County Council President told AGERPRES on Thursday that the new road bridge between Romania and Ukraine is expected to open next year.

"Most certain, the bridge could be opened to road traffic between Romania and Ukraine next year. Work is progressing rapidly, but there is still much to be done and the bridge could become fully operational in 2026," Gabriel Zetea said.

Currently, the road traffic between Romania and Ukraine uses a wooden bridge on a metal structure, put into service in the early 2000s, near Sighetu Marmatiei. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, road and pedestrian traffic has increased significantly and the bridge structure was so seriously affected that intervention by the builder was necessary.

Access to and from Ukraine is still possible via the Halmeu border crossing point in Satu Mare county.

Temporarily, passenger rail traffic also operated between Ukraine and Maramures county via the wide-gauge lines at the Campul Lung-Tisa and Valea Viseului entry points, but Ukrainian rail authorities have suspended train services.
