Chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Social Democrat Titus Corlatean, announced that he submitted his candidacy for the position of Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, according to Agerpres.

'I have made a decision. I reflected on it for some time beforehand. I have submitted my candidacy for the position of Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. I have also received the support of the Romanian authorities. I must confess that, given the political and ideological differences, I did not really expect it, so it was a pleasant surprise. I thank them,' Titus Corlatean wrote on Friday on his Facebook page.

He showed that it is 'a competition, nothing has been decided.'

'Today was the deadline for submitting candidacies for this important position within the Strasbourg-based organisation. I can say that there are several candidates, supported by governments of influential Western European states. However, I have no reservations about entering this competition, I have my professional arguments, which in short mean almost 32 years of career in foreign affairs for Romania, in European and transatlantic relations and on a broader multilateral level, of which 29 years have been directly connected with the institutions, functioning and remits of the Council of Europe (democracy, rule of law, human rights). We will see whether career and professional arguments will prevail or those of state influence or of another nature. In any case, it is also an important opportunity for Romania if it materialises. I do not have high expectations of internal solidarity in our country around this candidacy, as happens with other nations that have this culture. So I place what will follow in God's hands, while I will do my part, regardless of the outcome. I will keep you informed,' the Social Democrat senator also wrote on his social media page.
