Romania's ambassador to Australia Radu Gabriel Safta will participate starting September 2 in the fourth edition of the Sydney Dialogue, an event that has become a landmark on the map of international forums in the Asia-Pacific region. The event is also attended by Dan Cimpean, director of the National Directorate of Cyber Security (DSNC) and Adrian-Victor Vevera, general director of the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics ICI Bucharest, with this being Romania's first participation in the Sydney Dialogue.
According to the Romanian Embassy in Australia, the conference, organised by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) think-tank, tackles mainly emerging technologies and the development of artificial intelligence, bringing together experts and officials from Australia and other partner states that share common democratic values, such as the U.S., the UK and Korea. On September 2 and 3, participants will debate the latest developments in the field, including challenges ralated to them, at the Sydney Conference Centre.
Part of its participation in the Sydney Dialogue and under the coordination of the Romanian Embassy in Canberra, the Romanian delegation had a meeting with the Executive Director of ASPI, Justin Bassi, analysing the possibilities of bilateral co-operation in multiple areas, starting from cybersecurity, including co-operation in the area of security studies and coordination between research institutes.
Vevera said that ICI Bucharest's presence at the Sydney Dialogue represents a remarkable opportunity for an exchange of knowledge and the initiation of essential international collaboration for the advancement of state-of-the-art technologies and for protecting critical infrastructures from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. A new step was taken to promote innovation and international collaboration, aiming to increase national capabilities and integrate them with a global network of excellence.
Cimpean said in his turn that Sydney Dialogue 2024 is a concrete opportunity to position and increase the visibility of Romania's national cyber-security ecosystem to partners in the Asia-Pacific area. Moreover, it is a pragmatic format for continuing institutional conversations on current topics, such as cyber risks and threats, building common capabilities, resilience, challenges and the impact of new technologies.
t the end of the bilateral meeting, Romania's ambassador to Australia, Radu Gabriel Safta, concluded: "The participation of the Romanian delegation in Sydney Dialogue 2024 reflects both the expertise and capacity of the Romanian side to play a role in capitalising on opportunities and managing the challenges related to the development of emerging technologies, as well as the common values and visions that Australia and Romania share on a global scale. This dialogue with ASPI paves the way for bilateral co-operation at the level of experts and political and economic decision-makers."
Cimpean and Vevera will participate, at the invitation of the Australian Department of Home Affairs, in the Cyber Champions summit dedicated to cybersecurity co-operation between NATO and Indo-Pacific partner states - Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Korea.
The Sydney Dialogue is said to be an incubator of ideas, especially in the field of security, emerging technologies and international affairs, for leaders and experts from states that share democratic ideals. The meeting of the Romanian delegation with ASPI continues the steps taken by the Romanian Embassy in Australia in creating dialogue between ASPI and relevant institutions in Romania.
